MEGABITZ Setup Help

Getting Started

Please see our FAQ and AUP pages. As the account owner you are responsible if your account is used in violation of our Acceptable Use Policy.

Your Login

Your "login" consists of three parts:

  1. the name of our server;
  2. your username and
  3. your password.

Our server is news.megabitz.net

Your username and password were provided instantly if you subscribed using Paypal. If you subscribed using email or postal mail, they will be sent to you the same way.

Setting up and Signing on

Once you have your login, you need to enter it into your newsreading program. There are many "newsreaders" to choose from, depending on what kind of computer you use. (Our Support page has tips on setting up even more newsreaders, such as the Unix newsreader 'trn').

A good choice for Microsoft Windows is Luu Tran's free program, Xnews. Here is how you would set it up to use Megabitz for the first time.

Step 1
Tell XNews about your new MEGABITZ account...

Step 2
...and how to find the MEGABITZ server.

Define an optional nickname
You can give us a nickname. (It's optional.)

Step 3
Now tell XNews how to log on to your MEGABITZ account
with your username and password

We highlighted the fields in yellow just for this example; they will be ordinary boxes on your computer screen.

The default port number is 119. If you are behind a firewall and you don't get a connection, you can try port 80 or one of the other alternate ports listed on our support page.

Step 4
XNews will pick up a long list of newsgroups. Pick the ones that look interesting by clicking the red dot to "subscribe."

Step 5
The list of all groups is very long! When the "All" button is
pressed in, as in this example, there is a search box that lets you
limit the list to a type of group, or find a specific one.

Click on the red dot next to a group to add it to your "subscribed"
list. The red dot changes to a green pointer.

Step 6
Click the "All" button to see only your "subscribed" groups. That
is much easier to deal with, isn't it?

To remove a group from your subscribed list, click the green pointer
to its left, and it will change back to a red dot.

Happy newsreading from MEGABITZ!

Once you have your newsreader configured, you should not need to go through this setup procedure again, unless you move to a different computer.

Other newsreaders that are available for download are listed in the sidebar; these sites are not part of Megabitz. Some of these newsreaders are commercial products and will require you to purchase a license, but most will allow you to "try before you buy".
